Reasons to join DVC  (United States)

For those of you that own DVC or plan to purchase DVC in the future this is for you.

Please list our top reasons for buying into DVC and why you think it would be a good investment for others.

Please remember that this should be for positive responses only. We want all of the good points from DVC members over the years.

How long have you owned DVC? What are the things that you love about DVC? How many points do you own and how many trips are you able to take on those points?

Lets hear the good things about DVC!

Re: Reasons to join DVC  (United States)

I know there are some of you that own DVC. Why did you buy in? are you happy with your investment? Are you planning to purchase more points in the future?

I think that buying into DVC is the best thing that we could have ever done for our family. We are now able to take a more relaxing vacation every trip. We have never been "deluxe" resort Disney people. We always stayed in value or moderate resorts because of how little time we spent in the room.

Since we bought into DVC we have learned how to vacation the right way. For some reason staying in a DVC villa is a whole new experience. It is much, much more relaxing than any other resort. It is so much quieter than any other resort. Staying in a DVC resort makes you do something really weird too... RELAX. DVC has completely changed the way we vacation. We no longer feel rushed to to get to the parks or stay all night because we know we can and will be coming back.

When I leave Disney World I no longer feel like I need a vacation from my vacation. Life is good... very good.

Did it save us money? Yes! We paid for our DVC in cash. Not everyone can do that, but it meant we paid no interest. Now we have the yearly dues, but it is much less than we would pay in the long run, especially when you factor in that we go 2-3 times a year (we are going for 9 days over Thanksgiving) and our point will never go up. Who know what a value resort will cost per night in 10 years??

So, for us, this was the best thing we could have done. Since we paid our DVC out in the beginning, I always look at my vacations as "free". I know it was not really free, but it sure feels like it.

We put a lot of thought into DVC before we bought

We bought after looking at where we would stay for future visits. Since we were only staying at the Wilderness Lodge and seeing how much the room cost we sat down and added up what we were paying as to what we would have to pay if we went 2 times a year. We could see what the saving would be if we did buy into DVC. This was not even figuring in what the prices would be in 2, 5, or 10 years down the road.

We decided to buy resale since we wanted our home resort to be Villas at Wilderness Lodge. So after looking and finding what we could afford points wise we chose one and bought it. That was in July 2004 and we were going along just great till we went on a cruise this past June. We went to the DVC meeting and we won a towel…. Most expensive towel I have ever won. See we went and scheduled a meeting with our sales agent on the cruise since they were offering all kinds of discounts. Walking in to the meeting I am sure that we had already made up our minds even though I had not made up my mind. We did end up buying into a second DVC at Saratoga Springs right at that meeting. So I am not sure what we are doing with the other points but we must be saving money since we added on these points.

Yea right we bought in because Sherrie wanted to.

We added on because Sherrie wanted to.

You think I got a lot of say in this matter??????

We did look at the money we would save over the years and found we would save in the long run….

Truthfully, when you are a DVC member how far in advance do you have to book your vacations? Alot of times I just schedule myself where I get a stretch of time off but I don't know until maybe a month before if I'm going to get it. Then we book something. Or we look for the price of flights to go down and then we book. How far in advance do DVC members have to book?

Re: Reasons to join DVC  (United States)

I know this is an old post but I'm new and wanted to share.

I bought into the DVC in 1999 with my Aunt D (one of 5 Aunts) she had been saying since the DVC started that she wanted to look into it. I was 22/23 at the time, had a full time job and on that vacation with her, my sister and her boyfriend I dragged her over to a kiosk on our last day. We talked with a very nice man, who's name escapes me, I used to remember it, and he sent us over to the Boardwalk to talk to someone. We got Randy Cook as our guide through the DVC.

Back then we went on a vacation every 9 months, so I left the math to my Aunt D and she quickly realized it would save us so much money in the long run, and we could stay at these awesome hotels. Normally we'd stay at the Value or Moderate resorts. After very little convincing the four of us decided it would be the best thing to do and my Aunt D and I bought 150 points that day! (Finally paid off December 2009!) I made her do it that day because we procrastinate and the paper work would have never gotten filled out. We weren't pressued or anything, in fact we were left alone in a conference room to discuss for quite a while.

A few years ago my Aunt D felt like buying more points, Saratoga Springs was up for sale and there was a deal with prices on points. At Christmas that year she spoke with my mother and the 5 other Aunts about the DVC and convinced all but 1 of the Aunts to join in. We bought 115 additonal points at Saratoga Springs. That gives us 265 points all together. You can borrow points from the next year and you can bank points from this year if you aren't going. Not sure how many ponts are available right now (it's a math thing we let my Aunt D deal with that aspect) but if we budget them right (OKW is the least amount of points for the week) we can go at least twice a year.

You can book at your "home" hotel (Mine being Boardwalk and Saratoga Springs) 12 months prior to your check in date...which I plan to do in April/May 2010 for my honeymoon in April/May 2011. I plan on staying at the Boardwalk in a 1 bedroom (love that tub!). Then I believe you can book at any other DVC hotel 6 months prior to your check in, I think we have decided before we were going to Disney in 3 months once and called the DVC and got a great room. All you have to do is make a list of your #1 hotel (mine Boardwalk) then choose a 2nd hotel, 3rd and so on, the people on the phone are wonderful! Their number is the easiest thing to remember 800-800-9800 the coordinators are so helpful and knowlegable. They will help you make all your reservations, room, bus to the hotel, dining, any special needs, the DVC is fantasic!

Re: Reasons to join DVC  (United States)
So it is possible to book something just a month in advance? It's just me and Mike so nothing big would be needed. I'm still wondering about the booking on short notice. thanks

Re: Reasons to join DVC  (United States)

Stephanie it really depends on the season and just how some holidays fall from time to time. For example. I booked the trip to WDW through DVC for a studio about 3 weeks before the visit in June with no problem. I booked in January possibly 2 wks prior but when we tried to book for October last June we had trouble. There was very little left but we were able to get a 1 bedroom in Saratoga Springs Resort. We went during Columbus day weekend, a fall break for many colleges and DVC members love the lower temps even though they are not that low.

December books up fairly quickly but 6 wks out you can usually get something. When we booked AK when there were limited rooms in Jambo House I just asked for the first open slot in order to get a room.

If you don't mind where you stay then most often you can find something.

Re: Reasons to join DVC  (United States)
We looked at DVC in 2006 during a trip to POFQ and fell in love with the idea, but knew we couldn't afford the minimum purchase of $16,000 through Disney at that time. We would never finance something like this so we waited. We were quite content to stay at POFQ when we went to Disney World.

When Disney announced they were building Aulani, we started thinking about it again. We knew we wanted to go to Hawaii to celebrate our 10th anniversary in April, 2012 and Patti's son wanted us to go to WDW in January, 2011 so we started looking at how we could do it without financing it.

It finally made sense when we started looking at buying resale. We found a small 100 point contract at BWV with banked points and bought it in August 2010. We put the money we had budgeted for hotel stays on those two trips and added a little more from savings. We closed on it in early October and made our first reservation at BWV for 3 months later.

We loved our DVC membership during our first stay so we also purchased another small (55 point) contract through resale for SSR giving us 155 point total. Our total investment was less than $10,000, a far cry from the original cost to join through Disney. Now we can stay at least once a year.

We've stayed twice (14 nights total) now with our third trip (7 nights at AKV Kidani Village) coming in a couple of months and by the time we stay at Aulani in April, we have more than paid for our membership. Our hotel stays for the same amount of days would have exceeded $12,000.

As far as reservations go, there are times of the year when it is tough to get a studio at last minute notice. The times I know of are during the F&W Festival, and from Thanksgiving to Christmas, Easter week and Fourth of July. These are all prime time DVC times and you usually need to book way in advance for certain reservations.

I've heard that some of the toughest ones to get at this time is BWV Standard View, BWV Boardwalk View, AKV standard View, and BLT MK View.

If you buy DVC it is advised to buy where you want to stay so that you are be able to book the resort at the 11 month mark. We love the BWV location and everything about it. However, Bret and Sherrie didn't care for it as much as WLV because of the parking and long hallway walks..

There is a downfall though. It's called Annual Pass. When you are a DVC member you get a $100 discount on buying the annual pass. We did this in January and since the hotel cost had gone away and we had annual passes we went back in October. And then after we secured our Aulani Reservations for April, we still had points left, we decided to go again in early January, 2012.

Mickey is smart.... and he will get your money no matter what.

If you decide to buy DVC I'd look very hard at all the different resale sites out there today. You can save a lot of money and still enjoy staying at WDW.
