Massage/Chiropractors  (United States)

I went to a spa last weekend and had a Swedish massage done for an hour.  The massuse found that I had a ton of knots in my upper back, and found that my upper back and neck muscles were tight.  Which, I expected, because when I'm stressed, my body seems to "store" all of my tension in those areas...plus I sit at a desk for 8 hours a day.

The masseuse suggested that I get Therapeutic massages, which she said were different from Swedish and better for my tension, once a month.  Does anyone know if massages are really needed that much, or is that just a way for masseuses to get you back in?

To be honest with you, massages are a luxury for me and I only get them once a year, because if I'm lucky, someone will give me a gift card--I don't think they are cheap, and I definitely couldn't afford to get one once a month.

But then I thought about chiropractors--do they do this sort of thing?  Not that I'm trying to "beat the system" but if it's something that I need, then maybe my insurance would cover it.  I have never been to one, nor does anyone I know, so I'm not sure what type of services they provide.

Just thought I'd put the question out there before I called my insurance (Aetna's telephone CS is such a pain!!).  Any input is appreciated!!  Thanks!!!

Re: Massage/Chiropractors  (United States)

My doctor has told me that she believes that regular massages can be beneficial.  They do help relieve stress, and can help keep those knots under control.

Now, as far as chiropractors, some do massage therapy, and some chiropractic is covered by insurance (but it varies by policy).  My husband saw a chiropractor for awhile due to headaches, and his visits were covered, but his visits were more traditional chiropractic care.

If your insurance does not cover chiropractic therapeutic massage, you might consider seeing if your doctor knows any physical therapists that do therapeutic massage as that could be another option.  Your doctor might have to write you a "prescription" for it to be covered, but it is something to consider.

Now that you've brought it up, I think it's something that I may talk to my doctor about as I have some knots and kinks too.

Re: Massage/Chiropractors  (United States)

I know the feeling all too well of back pain from being top heavy. Unfortunately, a lack of health insurance makes it impossible for me to get any kind of help for it. I'd like to know if it was covered too since I'm hoping I can get some insurance at some point in the future.

Re: Massage/Chiropractors  (United States)

As someone who suffers from chronic pain I can tell you that most doctors will tell you that therapeutic massage will help with everything.

Massage is not just something that makes you feel good, it helps in so many other areas too. If you are in pain or stressed and carry it in your neck the tight muscles will cause you to sit wrong, do silly things like tilt your head to look at a computer monitor because it feels better but it is actually doing more damage. It is amazing how much massage helps you inside and out. Every one of those knots will cause you to protect that part of your body and will throw another part off by doing so.

When you are relaxed your brain functions better and it helps with depression.

Look for someone that specializes in the type of massage you need. If you like Swedish, stick with it! Just ask them to work a little deeper in your neck area. I have 2 therapists that I use. One is a therapist associated with an acupuncturist. She knows Fibromyalgia and does an amazing job. The other is more pain management and works with the whole body and stretching and putting me back together when I fall apart.

I try to get a massage once a month. My insurance does not cover it but once you go on a regular basis and see the benefit you realize that giving up a lunch with friends every now and then is WORTH it!!!

Re: Massage/Chiropractors  (United States)

I find massage helps me move my arthritic hips better.  I see a LMT/RN about once or sometimes twice a month for a thirty minute session.  She works wonders, but I do not find massage relaxing!  After your massage remember to drink massive quanties of water to flush the toxins stored in those tight muscles out of your system.

Deb I'm so glad to hear someone else who does not find the massage relaxing. My kids gave me a massage for my bd last year and I"ve still to use it.
