When do you begin yours and what do you pack that has proven to be an excellent idea?
Mine:(1) I pack a small fan to direct at the hangars that hold items to be dried a bit faster .
(2 ) I pack extra hangars.
(3) I pack a surger protector. Can't have too many outlets!

I'll usually start gathering things a couple of weeks before the trip, but I don't usually actually pack it until the day before (sometimes the night before).
As far as handy items, I agree with the surge protector as not only does it provide extra outlets, but it also keeps all the chargers in one place, so it's harder to forget to pack them up when you leave.
Additionally, I've found the following items to be very handy:
-- nightlight - makes going to the bathroom in the middle of the night in a strange environment much easier
-- plastic baggies - handy for lots of things from keeping the camera dry to containing loose change
-- tape - can be very useful to tack up a note to your traveling companions, or to fix something
-- scissors - good for removing the airline luggage tags and the party bracelets; be sure to pack them in your checked bag if you are flying
-- nail file & nail clippers

Deb, good topic!! I'm sure I'll return often and add more, but for now...
I start truly packing about a week before, washing everything and matching stuff up after I see what the weather forecast looks like. But I start laying stuff out much earlier (as in today, I was bored... ... just did a few things to see what I may or may not need to buy). For things that are "extras", I start putting them aside whenever I think of them, and usually have quite a pile by about 2 weeks before we go... somehow, for me, doing stuff early and as I go sort-of stretches out the trip, and I HATE last-minuting stuff... totally stresses me out. (Just ask my girls... )
Okay, first let me say that you guys have already helped add stuff to my list -- yeah!
Here are a few things I've found irreplacable...
* sound machine -- blocks out noisy neighbors, and/or noisy sleepers in the same room with you!! (aka Emma....)
*chip clips (plastic clips you use to hold chip bags together... not sure what everyone else calls them...) -- great for holding the curtains together to block out what always seem to be a bright light outside the room, or bright sun a bit too early!
*Echinacea and Zinc "candies" for if you start getting the sniffles...
That's all for now...

I can not say this enough,,,, Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen!!!!
I hate seeing a child with blistered shoulders while mom andf dad are fine but yelling at the kid while in pain.
If the child, who is a child by the way, refuses to wear sunscreen the the parent should refuse to take them out until they are ready to change their mind.

I've never taken a sound machine. I just turn on channel 18 (the Stacey Channel!) overnight to keep a little background noise on. However, I suppose maybe this is the OPPOSITE of the effect you are going for?!?
I found I could not sleep at CBR because it was too QUIET. I've never had a problem at WDW with it being too loud at night. (Of course, I sleep with a train that barrels past every few minutes at all hours of the day and night...)
As for something to bring...2 trips ago my back was aching. Not sure why; it rarely does. But I was not able to find Bengy or Icy Hot or anything similar ANYWHERE on property, OR at the DTD Hess Station. First Aid at MGM even looked through their supply list at all the Gift Shops and nobody carried it (although on my last trip I saw some....not sure if that was a new thing but whatever). Although one of the Port Orleans gift shops tried to give me a consolation of Mardi Gras beads. If anyone knows how to use those to help aching muscles, let me know...
Moleskin, along with scissors OR pre-cut, can save you some hassle too. It will save you the embarrasment of having to buy it at the gift shop and then sit and cut it into pieces on the floor of the gift shop while borrowing the store's scissors (and wearing said Mardi Gras beads).

I'm already packed and I still have 23 days to go. I second the sunscreen! I can not go outside without it!!! I also take travel size packs of Clorox wipes (good for wiping down those tables that birds have sat on and tons of dirty hands have touched) and travel size hand wipes. Those are essentials to me!

Wow you guys are really prepared! I don't have much "extras" that I bring really. I used to bring bandaids and moleskin but I found a great pair of shoes that don't hurt my feet even if I walk all day so I haven't needed that for a couple years. I second the baggy idea. I use that for loose change, any small stuff I don't want to lose in the bag. I also pack an extra duffle bag folded up inside my suitcase for all my souviniers. I always end up with park maps, tickets, wristbands, etc and that way I can put it all in one place. I like to have bubble bath to use while I'm there. I bring a hankie or washcloth to carry in my pocket so when I'm at the parks I can mop off. We have those little gel packs that go around your neck that I kept in the fridge to bring with us. I guess that's about it really!

I agree, this is a great thread. A lot of ideas i've never thought of packing before I will do this time round. I always bring some zip lock baggies with me too - and bandaids. This time also, we are driving so we can bring a little more than we could flying.
I've got 12 more days and I am going to start packing this weekend! Thanks for the great thread and good ideas! (Pre-trip report to come soon)!

This is a GREAT topic Deb! Here's a hint of something you might want to pack, we found out the hard way on our last trip that hydrocortisoneis like gold on Disney property. We went to the airshow right before we left for the World and AI forgot to sunscreen my lips, therefore right after we got there sun-poisoning broke out....... hydrocortisone is what the dr. usually treats it with and I'll be darned if you can find it anywhere. They are supposed to carry it at the baby-care centers but theywere ALL out in every park. They told us they could have it delivered from a pharmacy $$$$ we finally found it at the Contemporary but that was the ONLY resort we could get it at.... Just a hint.
I LOVE the surge protector idea for chargers, I've left a few over the years.

I have to have the surger protectors. I usually get new toothbrushes and pack them. It's always great to change them and that way they aren't left at the last minute.
Sorry guys but I get my fill of noise machines at work... but then I could sleep anywhere. I do like to take benedryl, bandaids, advil etc. spare batteries if needed for electronics and tons of wires w/ phone chargers, camera chargers and dowloading pics...
I try to keep down the clutter and bring family shampoos and toothpaste, when they get older you often end up w/ 4 full size tubes.... Scissors are a must. I have to have anti-bac in some form and towelettes for those sticky moments.
When it's sunny don't forget the sunscreen for those hair parts..
