Starting in March, Disney will be strictly enforcing the return time window on Fastpasses. 5 minutes before and 15 minutes after will be the cut off times. People returning after those times will be denied Fastpass access. This is in response to getting the system ready for the Next Gen portion of Fastpass.

Honestly, this really does not upset me. Just from a logical standpoint, the system doesn't "work" if you are allowed to come back whenever you want. I've always tried to honor my times, or pass along my fast passes to someone else who can use them. I truly think this will help the system run much more smoothly, despite the backlash the cast members will likely get. :( I'm very curious as to what changes will be made to improve the system.

Aren't they talking about changing it to be more like Universals where you pay extra for a FP?  I know they are supposed to have a system that allows you to schedule your rides. Honestly I would hate to have to stick to a schedule. Can you see it's tuesday so we have to go to MK and now we have POC at 2 Space mountain at 4... crazy.. I am interested in learning more.  I wonder if you will have an app for it?

I’m not sure how I feel about this one.  There are situations where it’s best that expired FPs shouldn’t be accepted (i.e. The Fantasmic Dump).  Most of the time, I don’t see a problem with them unofficially not expiring.  I don’t, however, know what the next generation of Fastpass is or how it will change or supersede the current system.  I know this; if your FP for Soarin’ is 1:05 to 2:05 and you find yourself in Morocco at 1:30, it’s nice to know you can use the thing later in the day.

Beth, depends how you look at it. The way I understand it is you will be able to book a FP from home just like you book an ADR. you will be able to book a time frame to ride Space Mountain. Enforcing the time window will help with these home bookings. I didn't hear there would be a charge for this, but who knows? I wouldn't doubt it if Disney is also working on a paid FP.

Personally, I don't like to plan my trip minute to minute. But there are plenty of people who do. This change does not bother me because, if I get a FP, i go back the time I am required to as per the time printed on my FP ticket.

I heard they will either charge or start with the deluxe resorts which means those who pay more will get more.  Of course as with any new system you have to start somewhere. We get many FP that go unused because our group is so ADHD we forget about them or are 1/2 way around the world.  I wonder if this new system will be for people staying on property?  That would make it interesting.

As for sticking to the time I never really tried to get in past my printed time on the ticket. How can the system work if people don't follow the rules as designed.

Your last sentence is the problem. People haven't been sticking to the printed timeframe. They come back when they want, which throws FP off and makes things worse.

I wouldnt be shocked at all if Disney charged for FP at deluxe resorts. And hoenstly, if it cuts down on FP usage, I'm all for it as I really do believe FP makes waits longer than they should be, mainly because the system is abused. If used correctly, the system would be fine. This is the step in the right direction.

I have gone back after the time expired when I was delayed because I was stuck on another ride that was broken down.

I can't imagine Disney charging for fast passes, but if they did, I bet it would make people think twice about going to WDW. I'd never pay for one. I'm cheap!

The cost for a family of four to go to WDW has already caused a lot of people to stop going there. And then you add the extremely high price for low quality food, it puts it out of reach for a lot of families.

We use fast passes but not enough to say so. We feel if an attraction is a 30 minute wait and we really want to ride/see it, we will walk the que and enjoy the view. If not we might fast pass it or pass up doing it altogether. Since we bough into DVC we have a totally different logic to our stays. If we don't get to do something this trip, we'll try to do it the next one.

But when we fast pass something we try to get back within the time window noted. If we don't want to wait that long we will gift them to somebody.

I could understand that. We stick to the time or give them away. I guess if you can get online it will cut down on the rush to rides when they open. This is good because we never get up early to go to a park.

I have been thinking about this, and I am still all for enforcing the times. I know people want to use the ADR as an excuse, or even a broken down ride. But here is how I view it. You have to make your ADR 180 days out, so you already know what day and time you are eating where. What you don't know is your FP return time. So, if you go to Magic Kingdom and have a 5:30 Liberty Tree Tavern ADR, and you want a FP for Splash Mountain, but the return times fall in or close to your return time, then you don't get yourself that fast pass. You can wait on standby right then and there if the ride is that important, or you can go to Splash Mountain first thing in the morning.

If there is a situation where you are on a ride that breaks down, something tells me there will be some leeway in these situations. There may even be a CM there to hand out fast passes that do not expire.

Truth is, we do not know what Disney came up with in regards to these changes. I am sure they are taking guest experience into account here since they are always concerned about guest satisfaction.

EDIT: Cast Members are slowly being trained on the new procedure beginning tonight. The current time frames are 5 minutes before your return time and 15 minutes after your return time. There will be a few exceptions such as CONFIRMED ride downtime and CONFIRMED dining delays (how they will confirm dining delays is beyond me). I'll give you more when I find out more.

On the CM employee page yesterday:

"In order to provide the best experience possible for everyone at our theme parks, all Walt Disney World Guests will be expected to return within their FASTPASS return time window, effective March 7.

Disney’s FASTPASS Service plays an important role in our Guests’ ability to enjoy their visit to one of our Walt Disney World theme parks, and our ability to provide this great service is dependent upon Guests returning during the designated window. The vast majority of our Guests are aware of their return times and arrive in the window printed on the FASTPASS ticket.

As more Guests choose to take advantage of this favorite feature, we want to provide the same opportunity to everyone. By asking all Guests to return within the window printed on their FASTPASS, more Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy this great service.

This is not a change, but simply a reminder of our existing policy. Exceptions can be granted for situations such as an attraction downtime, a delay in meal service or personal emergency."

I'm curious about the exceptions part, especially dining delays. How are they going to prove there was a dining delay for particular guests, and will they grant only a certain time frame window?
