I am getting ready to call Disney to order my gift card and thought I would share this with you....

This really is not a money saving idea as it is a way to keep from having such a huge bill when you arrive in Disney World.

Before each trip I order gift cards. I order 2-3 cards before we go, each about $200. I ordered one a couple of months ago and I am ordering one today. When I arrive in Disney World and Check in we can put those cards on the account or keep them and use them for shopping, dining, etc.

It is not really saving money, but it makes it a little easier to come up with the money when we get to Disney. Having $400-$600 when we arrive that has been paid off months before sure makes the trip a little more fun!

Very clever!  Great idea.  We'll have to give it a try the next time we go.

Hi Everyone:)

Another good idea is to get the Disney Gift Cards for your children with an amount of money you wish for them to spend on soveniers.  I would get a certain $ amount for each child and tell them you can use it to spend on whatever you like; however, when your Disney Gift Card is at $0 then that's it with spending.  It helps with preventing the "can I get this" or "just one more thing".   If they want to splurge on one big thing or tons of little stuff it doesn't matter.  It's helped so much and it has taught them being responsible with their $ and spending.  You be surprised if the little one will think twice before buying something and make a more conscious decision on what he wants:)

It's ashame Disney stopped making the Disney Dollars. . . that was more fun and it seemed like "real money" to them.  The Gift Card works just as good though:)

I love teaching children the value of money while on a Disney vacation. There is so much they often want and it helps them to plan and decide. I do miss the Disney dollars too because it was so easy to give as a gift. With everything headed to credit and debit cards at least the kids can feel like a grown up with their own "cards" and better than a room key because the limit is for them only.  Some children may need a little more help in managing it but a great way to help them learn.

I was just talking about how much we miss the Disney Dollars the other day. I agree, they were more like money and the characters on them made it fun for the kids. I always got the dollars for stocking stuffers, birthdays or anything else I could think of. A $10 bill was not too expensive and the kids had to save it for Disney... the card works the same way but ordering them for each birthday in small denominations in kind of a pain.

It's ashame too, with the Disney Dollars also . . . the kids were getting a quick "math lesson" when they had to count out their "money" to pay for things.   With the "gift card" . . . just swipe and go lol.   I guess I'll have to figure out another way to sneak in a math lesson now and then lol

I agree... the Disney Dollars were so cool!  On a trip to Disneyland with my sister's family, I gave my niece a $10 Disney Dollar... she wouldn't spend it.. She thought it was so cool... It has been about 6 years and I think she STILL has it!! LOL

LOL I know my kids still have a few hidden in their rooms . . . I think my oldest (16) thinks it might be worth alot some day . . . who knows he may be right! lol

If you are at a Disney Resort or the next time you go, ask the front desk or concierge, sometimes you are able to get some from them.  I'm assuming they might have them til they run out of them all.   My friend got a few the last time she went.

We have found ourselves utilizing the gift cards to help the budget as well.  Not necessarily beforehand, but saving what we want to spend and then purchasing the cards when we get there.  Or in our case, we really like the cards we have so we just reload them when we get there.

We started doing this when we went to Food and Wine festival last year.  We've learned in the past that our credit card company goes into a panic when we're pinging the card with $5 here and then $7 there in a matter of 30 minutes.  So one "purchase" on the credit card to fill a couple of gift cards and we're not only saving the credit card grief, but we're also making sure we stay within budget.

Now for those folks wanting to make sure the kiddos know how much they have spent, make them hold onto their receipts.  It might be an even more valuable lesson to teach them how to read a receipt so they can understand in the future the value of that little piece of paper, in this case to know what's left on the card, but also when at home and needing proof of purchase for returns.  Sure, it's not as much fun as counting out Disney Dollars, but it will still teach them valuable life lessons and that's the big picture! :-)

I was just thinking how I might gift my adult children Disney cards to use during our trip this year.

I remember the days of the Disney Dollars fondly.  Now that my children are in their twenties, we used our share of them.  I'm sure they will appreciate the Disney Cards loaded with some spending money just the same! but the math lessons will be lost!

Perhaps parents can create their own form of Disney Dollars. Children can pile the Disney Dollars that they have earned (and the parents have printed from the computer) onto the counter to pay for their treasures while mom or dad stand behind them to make the actual money transaction.

This is sort of the way my youngest paid for her first tricycle.  She gathered her passies into a ziploc bag, choose a trike from Wal-Mart, went with me to the counter to pay .  She placed her passies on the counter and I followed by handing the clerk a check.  She had her tricycle and we got rid of the passies!

I really like that idea Angel. I tend to go through the atm on the way to the airport and take a big wad of cash with me when we leave and then I worry about losing it. This way would be much easier and seem like spending less if it was spread out over time. Thanks   I'm going to try it on the next trip.

I am the same way. I HATE bringing cash with me. I am always worried I will lose it or someone with steal my purse. Nothing draws attention to someone with cash in their purse like a woman with a death grip on it. LOL.

Your trip is soon too isn't it Stephanie? you get the gift cards very fast so there is still time!
