Applying for state disability  (United States)

I have no idea where to put this so I am putting it here...

Have any of you had to deal with State Disability? I know you have to be out of work for a full year before you qualify. I have been out 6 months but the doctor says I need to get the ball rolling now because it takes months...

I am scared to death about where I go from here. I can't afford my meds. my monthy injection cost $1,800 a month.

Anyone out there that can ease my mind??

Angel are you referring to regular disability w/ the state? I know where the office is in BR it's the Social Security office. I assume you mean the federal which runs though the state. It's the same place you go to get a replacement card. Those attorney's are best at managing this but from what I understand you have to qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare. I would say start at the SSA (Social Security Admistration ) office in your area.

If you miss file they will chop off your head and feed it to the lions out back.... just kidding... chill it's just paperwork and the insurance is some of the best in the country. You get the same federal insurance as you would w/ medicare if you qualify. You need to ask your dr. if you are applying for temporary or permanent disability. I don't know the difference but you may have to apply for the temporary first, I'm not sure.

Angel,

I am not familiar with this at all but I think my mom was able to get my dad's social security benefits early due to being declared disabled.  I have always heard that they usually decline everyone the first time and you have to reapply.  Best of luck to you. I will keep you in my prayers that everything works out for you.

You've probably already been here, but here is a link to the Disability Determinations Services web-site for Louisiana

And, here is the link for the Social Security Administration's disability application for person's over the age of 18.

I know that my sister-in-law went on disability several years ago, and it was not an easy process.  She did end up having to go through the court proceedings to get it approved.  Good luck!

I currently have a disability policy through the Hartford. I have no idea why I got that policy but it was only something like a dollar more per check so what the heck right? I am sure glad that I did that! I don't know where we would be right now.

The Hartford has a group of lawyers that do everything for you, they file and if it is denied I don't even think they tell you, they just appeal. The best part is that the Hartford pays for all of it. The sent me the packet of forms to sign. it was funny, if it needed a signature there was a great big yellow highlighted sticker pointing to where you needed to sign. And they did not send the papers that did not need to be signed so I did not have to worry about all of the other stuff. Wish me luck...

Everybody that needs to work to earn money to pay bills should have a disability policy that will pay them at least 66% of their income or they are rolling the dice.   Good luck Angel.....  I'm glad you have The Hartford in your corner.   You will need them !

You are so right Tom. I do not know what we would do without that policy. I never thought I would be here right now... I had arthritis since I was 9 and beat every flare up and bounced back after ever orthroscopic surgery on my knees... but now I can barely bounce out of a chair. I do not make as much money, but it puts food on the table!

It's getting harder for honest people to get benefits because the government is supporting so many crooks.  Keep hanging in there.  ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT, AND WAIT, AND WAIT !!!   (almost forgot).

One of my friends sent me to talk to Charles Boustany, one of our congressmen. I don't know what exactly they do but I know they are over the disability hearings. After I talked to the girl at the office she told me she would work on getting my appeal moved up. After about an hour she told me that she did not understand why I was denied because of all of the documentation. She even said that they have people walking into the office that want to get on disability that "had something wrong with them when they were a kid" and want benefits now.... and they WIN sometimes!

2 days after I talked to her I got a letter from Social Security saying they were working on moving my appeal up and I should hear from them within a couple of months.
