Ok gang someone has asked me about travel to WDW with special needs on FB and I asked if I could repost it here to get your input and support. HERE are her questions...
have a question for you... my disability is somewhat different and in 4 parts and I'm not how to go about requesting the card and from who and what I should have with me. So here goes 1. I have a resricted airway and have a tracheostomy...I can keep it closed unless sleeping or excerting myself the.. it must be opened and at which time I casnnot easily verbally communicate 2. I am on 3 medications that require me to avoid prolonged sun exposure. My skin will actually blister. 3. Mobilty issues... as if the resricted airway isn't reason enough... I have heart/lung issues...I can walk short distances but not much more and use a scooter when out shopping or at the parks etc. 4. I am a diabetic and suffer from neuopathy... What is your suggestion... do I need a Dr. to list/explain all these things...who do I turn it in to and do I have to repeat this process for everyday I'm there and do I have to do it for each park? I'm also going on the Disney cruise... do they require anything like this as well? Any answers you have will be greatly appreciated.... =0)

Just a few thoughts...
You can get a scooter for the length of your stay from Buena Vista Scooters (mention mouse-aid). There is a lot of walking involved at Disney World even outside the parks, so it's good to have the full time. With the sun sensitivity, I would suggest also getting a sun canopy to help protect you. I would also suggest carrying an umbrella with you to use for shade.
I've seen clothing that protects your skin from the sun but is very breathable. That might be something to look into. I've seen it at Academy Sports & Outdoors.
You could carry a small dry erase board for communicating when your trach is open. They have pens that have an eraser on them, so it's not too much to keep up with.
As far as the Guest Assistance Card (GAC), I've never gotten one, so I'm not sure of the requirements. I believe that you get a card for the full length of your stay that is good at all the parks. I would suggest that you go ahead and get a note from your doctor just in case. It would probably be best if it was in bullet form like you listed.
I don't think there are any requirements like this on the Disney cruise, hopefully someone that knows for sure will be along soon with that information as well as better information on the GAC.

I've read through this several times now hoping some answers would pop in my head, but I think Rhonda answered all your concerns quite well.
As far as the cruise goes, I don't think there will be any issues other than the ones covered for the parks so I don't see it as a concern.
All of us here at mouse-aid hope your trip is magical in every way. Please come back here and join so we can hear all about your trip.
and and most of all.......... God bless.
I want to put my two cents in
Yep, Rhonda covered it very well.
The only thing I can add is the Assistance Card is very easy to get. Just check in at guest services and they will provide it to you. Quite frankly though, if you rent a scooter or wheelchair etc most places have a seperate entrance or different accomodations for you so I didn't feel like we needed to show it very often.
Good luck, and have fun!!!
It's not widely know that there are different guest assistance card levels. With this individual's medications and potential for skin blistering, they should request the one marked with an arrow and says "guests may use an alternate entrance where available", not merely the "wheelchair access" stamp.
I did send her a private message as to the different forms of GAC. Thanks guys for the input
Rhonda, thank you for answering so quickly! Beth called me and I was in an appointment then left for vacation. My phone still does not like posting....
Beth, please let her know that if she needs any additional information on the cards or has questions any other questions she can send me a message and I will be happy to answer.
I put my two cents in
Is there a short cut to the latest comments?
I have a user name, now what?
How do I get an avatar?
Are there rules?
What can I use as a user name?
Should I use my own name?
