I am not sure which site the family is staying. They have One room with a king bed and double, and they plan to stay at the park for 2 weeks. The majority of Hayden's feeds are through a feeding tube, he can take small amounts by mouth. Hayden whilst at home goes to school with a nurse. He is bright, funny, he is in a french emmersion programme. Hayden is like a normal healthy child until it comes to his body. Hayden does need to rest frequently at school he spends his day horizontaly, it is too hard on his body to sit in his motorized wheelchair. During the week Hayden has a night nurse so the family can get some rest. There will not be a nurse on this trip, so Tina and her husband Ian will take care of Hayden by themselves.Hayden has a sister Lauren (7 years old) so they are a family of 4. Tina has to make Haydens feed up every 72 hours and yes it does have to be refrigerated.

This may have already been asked and I just missed it...What are the exact dates they will be here at Disney? We stayed at the Boardwalk for our Hayden's Make A Wish Trip and it was great. My only concern would be unloading the van. It is valet parking and the cars have to be parked a good ways away. For their situation it would be worth it to spend the extra money to have Valet park the car and a bellhop help them with the bags so they can take care of Hayden. The good thing is they are walking distance from Epcot and a ferry ride away from Hollywood Studios.
I would also suggest if they are with a local Hospice team or maybe their home care team can get in touch with Hospice here and they may be able to arrange for a night nurse while they are here. It may be cramped but at least they will get some sleep.
Talk to you soon!

If you have a handicap permit isn't it a little closer? We didn't have trouble parking in Feb but you never know when the lot is full. The handicap parking is right in front of the bus stop and I think there is more behind valet. The problem w/ handicap parking is that they fill up so fast.
I agree about getting a nurse for a break, even if it's to go to dinner. Everyone deserves an attitude adjustment time. Funny how people think travel when they are stressed but travel is sooooo stressful because everyone is out of their routine and element.
Thanks Kyle for you and Eva too. .

This is so good to know, they have a lot of equipment that has to be taken in. They leave Ontario on may 5th and have given themselves 4- 5 days to get to Disney, just so Hayden has plenty of time to rest in between travelling. They are actually booked into the park for 2 weeks. I think thay ck in on May 10th. I know Tina and her family are looking foreward to some family time. They have someone in their home 5 nights a week when they are at home and although they appreciate it very much, I think between them they will manage. Hayden does communicate in the night if he needs something.
Tina hopes to log in tomorrow night, weekends are family time, and she has very little time as you can imagine to spend on the computer. Thank you for all your helpful comments so far, and maybe when Tina has the chance she can fill you in on more of their wants and needs. I am planning on going to Disney next year with my kids, so I am taking all of this info in and loving it!! great job!!

Don't forget to let the resort know that you are traveling with a sick child. They often try to have the room ready for rest when you arrive. Let us know if you need help with that. Angel (Mickey's Angel) is great with helping to set up those special needs.
Kyle: I"ve used the 1st aid station/baby station many times to feed babies and once when my child was injured but do you know if they have a cot that Hayden can rest on so that he doesn't have to go back to the room every two hours? You know that would involve a lot of transportation time and stressful on the entire family. A regular stretcher should do.

First: Yes the handicap parking is MUCH closer ususally right next to the entrance and easily within walking distance. My only concern would be at Magic Kingdom, you will still park closer to the TTC, but will have to either ride the monorail of the ferry. If hayden is sitting in his chair the monorail will be fine they have wider stalls for wheelchairs but they can get packed especially with morning and night rushes. The ferry is a little slower but you have more room to spread out in.
Second: in answer to Beth's question the baby stations can be good for peace and quiet, but are set up for babies. They would do better to go to the First Aid Station they have big loungers Hayden could use to stretch out on for a little bit if needed.
My other question is can Hayden's parents lift him to help him get onto rides or is he strictly confined to his chair. If they can help him that may open up some more rides for him that he may not be able to do otherwise, like Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Carribean. We did that alot with our Hayden but he was only 2, big difference between a 10 yr old boy.
Another Word of warning sort of. Anuimal Kingodm's terrain is not real wheelchair friendly and can be extremely rough as you are rolling through. It is still fun, but just wanted to give you a heads up.
Also do have they made any food reservations or are they doing all Counter Service. It can help alot with a sick child to beable to go into a restraunt and not fight for a table, especially with all the medical equipment. They still have time to make reservations, or if they need help they can give us their reservation number and where they want to eat and we can try to get them reservations. Just let us know
Kyle and Eva

Kyle can those loungers allow him to go completly flat? like a stretcher?
I also agree w/ you on the terrain at (animal kingdom) AK. My dad flipped his scooter there and though there were wonderful ppl there to help pick him up (he weighed 275) it's dangerous. the edges have curbs and slight hills too (hills for ppl who are used to flat land)
I do think Hayden would love the Pirates of the Caribbean.

New tidbit. If they are going to be there for 2 weeks they will also be there for the first week of Star Wars Weekends at HollyWood Studios. If Hayden or any of them are into Star Wars they should plan to attend it's alot of fun! (P.S. Beth, Angel I am so dissapointed we don't have even one Star Wars Smiley I can put here. )

Hey beth about the loungers to be honest I am not completely sure if they lie flat or not. I would assume so, but I just don't know. I will try and find out though.
Also Eva brought up a good point, even if Hayden can transfer Pirates might not be good because of the drop. If he doesn't have any muscel control that could cause problems. (I really should consult with Eva first before I write these things. LOL ) Just something to think about.

Hayden is strictly confined to his chair, unless resting. As far as I know Hayden can't eat sitting up so therefore is not comfortable in restrants.

Does Hayden actually eat or is he fed through a feeding tube? What are the others going to do for food? Are they bringing food or just planning to eat as they go? I think this question was already asked, but does his chair recline so he can rest or does he need a bed?

Kyle are you using IE? Ok I just added this Yoda for you. I have a couple in my files.
Kyle Caroline did mention that Hayden has a feeding tube but can taste some foods. Since he can only sit up a couple hours then I would think a restaurant would be difficult for them unless they had a CNA to help while Hayden rested. She did say his chair does not recline.

Hi guy's, here is just a little info on sma that I thought may be helpful to you all, sma children are so unique and they often get confused with other neurological diseases.
What is SMA?
Most babies with SMA are born after a normal pregnancy, are seemingly healthy, and pass all current newborn screenings. SMA is a terminal and degenerative disease that causes weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles in infants and children. Specifically, the disease is caused by an abnormal or missing gene known as the survival motor neuron gene (SMN1), which is responsible for the production of a protein essential to motor neurons. Without this protein, lower motor neurons in the spinal cord degenerate and die. As the motor neuron network breaks down, the ability of the brain to control muscles diminishes and with less control and use, muscles weaken and waste away. Simply, SMA eventually impacts every muscle in the body hindering the ability to walk, sit, stand, eat, breathe, and swallow. The mind always remains unaffected and children with SMA are bright, sensitive, and playful in spite of their failing bodies.
As you can see Hayden is a very special boy with very special needs, and he is certainly all of those wonderful things that is mentioned above, so I think with all these limitations, the most important thing is for this family to enjoy as much as they can, in a reasonable time frame, and so they can eat, love, laugh and get the most out of this wonderful Disney experience without compromise to Hayden's health. Thay certainly don't expect to to everything, I think the more tips on excteing things that Hayden can do within reasonable proximity to where they are staying would be great.
I thank you all again for all your tips and comments !! you are all so great for careing so much

Wow, wow and wow! First of all, Caroline, thanks so much for finding this site and for wanting so much to help us make this trip as magical as it can be. And thank you to everyone who has been sharing their knowledge and caring. I have to say I am overwhelmed by the support here (and that is in the most positive sense). I think as the date of departure approaches, we are trying so hard to not be overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of this trip. The countdown is on as we check in 3 weeks from today, on Mother's Day!!! I am going to try to digest all of the info and will be prining tons of stuff from here to take with us.
Caroline has done an excellent job explaining our situation. I can fine tune things a bit
- Hayden cannot transfer out of his chair very easily. In our desire to have him experience things we would love to be able to sit him on our lap but his muscle tone is simply so weak. Hayden does not have any head control so sitting him out of his chair means too much compromise on his breathing and swallowing, not to mention the pain we could inflict on his back.
- His chair tilts but does not recline, meaning it does not lie flat but simply tilts, if that makes sense.
- Chair tolerance changes daily. And this is so uncharted in Hayden's world that we don't know what to expect. He has severe scoliosis and wears a rigid body brace. With increased sitting and the heat, I suspect that some days, we may just stay at the hotel to give his back a break. Those may be more pool time for Lauren, etc. This is the main reason we are staying so long. We can't do 10-hour days like most and we may not be able to do the park at all some days. Taking it all in in tidbits is likely going to be the way this will unfold.
- Hayden can no longer eat sitting up. He does eat lying down. He eats only for taste and not any life-sustaining amount. While he loves to eat, he cannot eat enough to nourish him so he has LOTS of feeds throughout the day and night.
Now, we do have a basic meal plan.
******I have a question here*****. For sit-down meal "tickets" could we ever use to take away and bring food back to our room so Hayden could actually partake? We have booked Hoop-De-Doo and the Luau and those will be quiet days ahead of the shows. Hayden simply will not eat those meals but be there to enjoy the show. We have a few other dinners booked but I don't want to be eating out a lot because Hayden will likely be tired out by dinner and I don't want him to have to not eat. We would be going for the atmosphere (I think Coral Reef is one of our destinations).
- We are not travelling with a nurse because we need to be the unit that is just us. While it would be helpful, we feel it would detract from our privacy. And we will never leave Hayden (or Lauren, for that matter) with anyone we were not completely familiar with and they, with Hayden's care. That is just the way we are and have operated for 10 years. While we are so thankful for the nursing help we do have, just imagine that we have someone in our home 5 nights a week. We are completely versed in all of Hayden's care and my husband and I are an amazing team.
I don't know what else to write right now. I will surely have more questions but I really need to sit, digest all the info. that is here and come up with those questions. If there are details that would be helpful to you, let me know.
Again, thanks so much everyone!

Ok I hope someone can help me here. We usually break up questions into their threads b/c some ppl feel more comfortable giving advice within a particular area i.e. dining plan, shows, resort options etc.
I will be at work tomorrow so sometimes I hop on in the a.m but I can't get on at work.
We have a dining section where ppl lay out their dining plan. dates and restaurant for the trip. Then feed back is easier in that format
Swimming: resorts don't allow pool hoping. I think one of the pools was down at Boardwalk and they were allowing swimming at the beach club but I have to check or ask someone else to answer.
I will make up a list for you or itemize the rides in a column format so we can make sure everyone has their comments. I'm still worried about It's a Small World.... it rattles but doesn't really jerk you.
We have'nt talked about parades and shows either and other entertainment.
I know you can rent DVD's at the food courts/gift shops at some resorts. Does anyone know if that is just DVC?
Do we have a resident princess maker? WE don't want to exclude Lauren... Is the Hanna Montana makeover at the Bibbity Boutique? Remember reservations are often needed.
If you are doing the luau dont' forget to catch the electrical parade on the lakes.
I'm concerned about fluids too. People who do not move a lot can often perspire and lose body fluids in what might seem like a mild day and can Hayden wear sun screen? You can get burned in the Florida sun in May, hats and sunscreen are a must and sunglasses often help.
I love the coral reef.
There are usually fun things to do around the resort too even fireworks from a balcony and don't forget you can hear the sound from your TV. (I know Capt Tigger knows the station)
.I used to manage what we call a waiver program here, where we sent CNA's to the home or even traveled with people on vacation. I do understand what you mean about privacy.
When my kids I used a WDW babysitter, they are bonded, but sounds like you are comfortable and are not looking for respite during the trip.
I know they let you take your leftovers out. I have to check on take outs with the restaurants. I know the quick service has take out and delivery.
More tomorrow...

Hey SMA Momma, glad you had an opportunity to join us. I am sure things are REALLY hectic right now. If there is anything we can do please don't hesitate to ask. Also my wife Eva and I would love to get together with you and your family when you get here. We live in Clermont, about a half hour away and go to the parks often. Also if you would like we would be happy to tag along on any of your days and give you any advice you would like or any suggestions. Feel free to email us at kyleandeva@aol.com and we would be happy to give you our phone number too. I don't know if you read or not but our little boy was named Hayden as well and needless to say this has struck a cord with us. Also we are starting our own business taking pictures of special needs families as they come down to the world, being their own personal photographer and tour guide. If you would like we would love for your family to be our first family (and guinee pigs too LOL) to offer our services to at no charge since you would be our inagural family.
Prayers and Pixie Dust. (we have connections with Tink and friends)

Hi Kyle and Eva! First and foremost, blessings to you both for sharing your story and wanting to help families like ours. I absolutely knew your son's name was Hayden. What a special boy he was, born to entirely special parents. We are dumbfounded by the outpouring of support that has flowed our way from this incredible site. I have emailed you separately so please check there too.
And, Hi SMA girl, cannot thank you enough for finding this site and doing so much to help make this trip Magical! ((((HUGS)))
